Wax Bloom

“Jan”, Update #6

April 18th, 2008 · 3 Comments

So I’ll bet you’ve been wondering the entire time I’ve been working on this just what Jan would look like were we to hang uncooked bacon from the side of her face. Behold!

In progress photo of colored pencil drawing entitled Jan.

(Don’t worry, those are just the initial layers of her hand – it’ll look better any day now…I hope.)

Nice work! Any suggestions for dealing with wax bloom besides spraying fixative? Have you ever tried spray varnish?

I’ve never used a spray varnish (or any varnish for that matter) so I can’t speak to how it would help prevent wax bloom.

I think your choice of support has a lot do with its occurrence (hot press paper/board seems to be more prone to it), as the only time I have issues with it are those times that I’m not using sanded paper or cold press board.

Pair a smooth surface with heavy burnishing and its a sure recipe for wax bloom. For that reason, I stick with rough surfaces.
