Wax Bloom

Then vs. Now

October 10th, 2008 · 5 Comments

So there’s a reason I called my most recent drawing Ganz, the Sequel. This is the second time I have drawn my friend Steve Ganz, the first being in March of 2007. This was not terribly long after I had returned to drawing, and was just my 5th after returning from a considerably long hiatus from art.

I’d like this post to serve as a reminder to myself, as well as those of you out there who may be faltering in your quest to refine your abilities, or not feeling like you are making enough progress fast enough – because Lord knows I feel that way a lot. I have been drawing for a few hours nearly every day for the past year and a half, and I want to share with you the progress I have made in that time in both ability, competence with the medium, color and composition.

Seriously, looking at that feels really, really good.

    Wow! I really like it.
    You’ve always been talented but I can see how you’ve progressed, especially in your skin tones. I do get frustrated with myself for not being where I want to be but I know that it just takes time and practice, practice, practice.
    Speaking of which…
    back to work for me!

    Hi – I wanted to say “thanks” for the inspiration. With work, home, children, and outsiders’ critiques, it sometimes feels like an uphill battle to grow and continue on as an artist. I too, have been drawing since I could hold a pencil, and it’s thanks to artists like you who really say “hang in there” and “keep on keepin’ on” (sorry, bad 70’s ref). I’m working to develop the “thick skin.” I really love this latest piece because of the color you’ve chosen, but especially for the composition. It’s a winner.

    @Kasie – Thanks so much.

    @Jen – You’re too kind. I’m at once humbled and honored that I’ve given you any small inspiration.
